Hairstyles for hot weather

Posted by Katja Hentschel

India, Australia, Marocco, Brazil, Cuba – what do those countries have in common (other than being places I would rather be in right now than in freezing cold Germany)? They can get very very hot. Probably too hot to worry about which lipstick best to wear in the morning. Instead you might need to think of ways to adapt your look to the temperature. What this means is simple – light clothes and your hair worn UP. To stay away from the ever so boring ponytail, i’ve made a list of hair solutions that are simple and easy to do and will keep your head from sweating a waterfall.

1. Make two braids with your hair above your neck. Then wrap them around your head attaching them with pins – cute, easy and better than any ponytail.

2. Make a high ponytail, twist and wrap it into a bun. Use pins to attach it.
This is one of my personal favorites – the french braid. Tuck in the end of the braid for maximum cool-keeping.

3. Pin your hair into a messy bun. Wrap a bandana around your head, if you like, or simply add a flower for that bit of holiday feel.

4. The french twist is considered a style people wear on fancy occasions but i wear it almost every day. In a messy version of course. It’s quick, easy and fashion-conscious.

5. And for the days where you are just in no mood to make any type of hairstyle or if your hair is simply not having any of it – why not pack a good old-fashioned hat? It keeps your face in the shadow and is a great fashion statement.

litle side note: this last photo is the back of my head in Delhi, India by the way. Yes it’s hot and smoggy but if you can maintain a decent hairdo and maybe wear a nice dress you risk to be treated with a lot more respect, especially when you are traveling alone as a woman.

Beautiful travels,
Katja

    Dear Leonie

i’m glad you could find some inspiration for a new hairdo. The last photo is just a french braid. Since I have naturally curly hair it turned out a little messy like on the photo. Check out this tutorial for the basic moves http://www.ehow.com/video_17115_french-braid-hair.html and then just add your own twist. Once my entire head is breaded, i tuck in the tail end of my braid, just above my neck. good luck with it!

    Hi Jerry,

the French twist is definitely a gerat look for almost any occasion and actually a very quick hairstyle to do. The best tutorial I have found for a French twist the way I do it is by this Japanese girl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXfR1WiJv6s. You might not understand the words but you can just copy what she does. Practise a little and you will be a pro twister in no time!

Love the top hairstyle — it’s a French braid with the tail tucked under. I wear my hair like this a lot in French Polynesia, India and Africa. Not only is it great for keeping cool in hot climes (and so easy to do with hair that’s a bit more malleable after a swim in salt water) BUT it’s great when you are in places where showing off your hair or wearing bold makeup/clothing as a woman — especially a white Western woman like me — is not a good thing to do. Sometimes when you travel, you need to be discreet and abide by local customs and this is a great way to ward off unwanted attention while still looking nice in those places. xx

I love the french braid one – but to be honest i always struggle when doing it myself – it is so tough to do it backwards on your own hair, and just so easy to do it on someone elses hair… :-) but the effort is definitely worth it! if you have any further easy hair styling tips, happy to see them!
